Hailstorm hits southern Malawi, displacing thousands

A fierce hailstorm has displaced over 1,000 people in Malawi’s southern districts of Thyolo, Neno and Blantyre, APA learnt here Wednesday.

According to Meteorological Department senior official Winston Chimwaza, the hailstorm which was combined with rains, destroyed property worth millions of kwachas.

There was no loss of life, however, according to the weatherman.

"We have reported the matter to the Department of Disaster and Preparedness to see on how they could assist these people who have been affected in terms of shelter and food," he said.

Chimwaza added the hailstorms were a normal occurrence and people should expect normal rainfall during this year.

Malawi and other southern African countries receive rains between the summer months of November to March.
