The Media Institute for Southern Africa (Misa) in Malawi has a new national director.
Chikungwa will take up the post on August 1, according to a Misa statement. He is currently lecturing at a private university, the Share World Open University in the city of Blantyre. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and a masters in media and theatre, both from the University of Malawi.
Before he joined the ShareWorld Open University, Chikungwa worked for Blantyre Newspapers Limited, publishers of a number of papers including the Daily Times, the Malawi News and the Sunday Times.
The position of National Director fell vacant when the former director, Innocent Chitosi resigned after deciding to stand in the May general elections.
Chitosi worked for MISA Malawi for over seven years, first as information officer and then as national director. He was defeated in the election, and has indicated he now intends going into business and media consultancy.

Malawi: Court throws out opposition leader
The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president John Tembo who recently challenged the presidential election results in court has lost the case. Tembo was among the seven presidential candidates in the country's May 19 elections which gave President Bingu Wa Mutharika a lead.
Malawi: thousands vote
A High Court on Friday dismissed the case as premature and a classic example of abuse of court process. High Court Judge Robert Chinangwa further said the MCP president who came second in the presidential elections rushed to court before he exhausted the whole process with the Electoral Commission.
According to The Sunday Times, Chinangwa also faulted Tembo for failure to satisfy the constitutional requirement to lodge an electoral challenge within 48 hours after polling.
The report further quoted Chinangwa as saying that the MCP president failed to include president Mutharika, who was second respondent in the petition, to defend himself from the claims. The judge said the president’s right to be heard was violated.
Recently the clergy in the southern African country called upon the opposition leader to withdraw the case in the interest of national unity. Malawi’s Electoral body declared Mutharika the winner early on May 22 before his inauguration the same day.
He accumulated over three million votes against Tembo’s two million. President Mutharika’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) also swept more seats in Parliament.

Malawi All Share Index stuck
Malawi's scale of trading on its Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE), the Malawi All Share Index (MASI) has not shown any activity for the last four weeks raising more fears on its performance; the local shares market has not registered significant share price gains since the beginning of this year.
MSE operations manager John Kamanga said despite registering negative returns in the second quarter covering April to June, they still see light at the end of the tunnel, hoping to pick up the pieces in the third and fourth quarter.
In a report detailing activities on the market up to 10 July 2009 there are all indications of non-movement in prices of all listed counters traded as the MASI has remained at 4 952.11 points.
Nonetheless, trading activities registered during the period involved eight counters of Press Corporation Limited (PCL), TNM plc, Standard Bank, Real Insurance, Illovo Sugar, Malawi Property Investment Company (MPICO), National Bank of Malawi and NBS Bank.
The weekly market report showed that a total of 2.8 million shares were traded during the week raising about US$92 373.93 in 29 deals.

Fungisai to Tour Malawi
Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave will tour Malawi for the first time at the end of the month.
The gospel musician will stage six shows between July 31 and August 8 in different cities in that country.
Zvakavapano said the tour would be part of a regional programme during which she will also travel to Mozambique, South Africa and Botswana before the end of the year.
Her return from Malawi is likely to coincide with the release of her eighth album that was recorded last month.
The musician said she was looking forward to an interesting experience in Malawi.
“It will be our first time to perform in that country but we are looking forward to a great trip.
“It will be a great opportunity for us to expand our fan base and we will go in our best form,” Zvakavapano-Mashavave said.
She said the regional campaign was the beginning of a greater plan that is likely to involve overseas tours next year.
“We have tried to go to the UK on several occasions but have had problems acquiring visas.
“We are planning to have overseas tours next year but we are still drafting the schedule.”
Turning to the upcoming album, the musician revealed that she has worked with Bethen Pasinawako of the Ndinzverei fame on some songs.
“The album is now complete but I am still to come up with its title. It will feature six songs and Bethen’s voice has added a new dimension to our music. It was great working with her.”
The musician’s manager and husband Courage Mashavave said the Malawi trip had come at a right time when the group was beginning to cast its nets beyond borders.
“This trip will lay the foundation for our plans. When the group goes there, it will be able to get an idea of what our regional fans will enjoy and we will prepare for other trips on that basis.
“The regional tour will then prepare us for other plans abroad,” Mashavave said.
The regional tour and the new album would add another chapter to the diva’s music history that spans for more than a decade.
