CHILDREN in a Malawi village have their heads in books after teachers from the Grammar School in Leeds travelled out to Africa.
During the February half term deputy head Barry Brindley visited projects that Leeds Girls' High School has sponsored.
Last May during half term Mrs Judith Kerr, Head of English at the Headingley site, visited Mbonekela primary school with Mr Brindley as part of a teaching programme with Kamuzu Academy.
She was delighted to see the photographs Barry took in February showing the progress that has been made.
And in another show of hands to Africa Christine Summersell, UK treasurer of the Open Arms orphanage in Malawi, came to Leeds Girls' High school to collect a cheque for £3,000, which had been raised by pupils as part of the Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme (LEAP.)
When they were in year 11 the girls formed their own company called Cult Icon and sold hoodies and t-shirts.
Christine Summersell thanked the girls for the generous donation and said that it would be put to good use.
