Madonna delays adopting Malawi tot David Banda

BUSY Madonna has put off completing her long-running adoption saga for toddler David Banda.

Government officials in Malawi have recommended their High Court formally approve the move.

But 49-year-old Madge has asked them to delay the final rubber-stamp hearing due to a "prior engagement" in the US.

She and husband Guy Ritchie had been expected to fly to capital Lilongwe early next week. Now the hearing has been moved to "a date later than the 16th".

A High Court statement said this was "because Mrs Ritchie has an engagement in the city of New York on April 14.

Madonna began adoption proceedings in 2006 and 30-month-old David has been living since then with the star and film director husband Guy in London.

Last October, a London High Court judge granted the couple temporary custody. Under Malawi law, the Ritchies would be assessed for their suitability as adoptive parents between 18 and 24 months.

A welfare chief wrote a glowing report after a visit, saying he was impressed at "how David has bonded with his new family".
