A 20-year old Malawian swimmer, Charlton Nyirenda, won the Beijing heat of 50 metres freestyle race in 27.46:2 (seconds) but failed to reach the semifinals, APA has learnt here.
Grouped in a category for fellow unseeded eight swimmers on Thursday, Nyirenda effectively beat his previous personal time of 28.78 (seconds) to come tops in the heat but failed to earn a place in the semifinal of the cream picked from the 13 heats.
Having gone to Beijing on the Solidarity programme set up the by the Olympics programme alongside three others, Nyirenda\’s modest time was not good enough to earn him a place in the semifinals for the best 16 of the 13 heats.
His performance, however, was the best that Malawi has done at the Olympics.
