Malawi enters third week of 2009 elections registration

Malawi Information and Civic Education Minister Patricia Kaliati on Monday will kick off her campaign to civic educated the masses on the need to register in large numbers to enable them to cast their votes in the country’s May 2009 presidential and parliamentary elections.

According to radio announcements, the outspoken minister will stir up her campaign trail in the southern Malawi district of Chikwawa, along with her team of official civic educators, urging the citizenry of the importance to register and elect leaders of their choice.

The Malawi Electoral Commission, which has divided the registration exercise into phases due to lack of adequate equipment to produce laminated registration cards with photographic images of the voters, hopes to register seven million voters for the 19 May 2009 polls.

Kaliati’s programme will take her nationwide till the registration exercise ends on 29 November 2009.
