Malawi inflation shoots up
Malawi's August inflation has shot up to 9.1 percent as against 8.7 percent in the month of July. A statement from the country's National Statistical Office (NSO) said it is an increase of 0.4 percent. NSO stated that urban and rural rates stand at 11.2 percent and 7.9 percent respectively.
The statement said the national food inflation has gone up by 7.1 percent as compared to an increase of 6.6 percent experienced between the same periods last year. NSO disclosed that the core inflation, which excludes food costs, also rose by 0.2 percent in the month before to 11.2 percent owing to price increases in some items.
The Southern African country, which depends on agriculture for its economic development last month, experienced an increase in commodities due to fuel price increase among others.
