Malawi to host regional coffee cupping contest

Malawi will host a three-day 2008 Southern Africa Coffee Cupping Competition scheduled to take place from 25 to 27 September in the commercial city of Blantyre, APA learnt here Monday.

Coffee Association of Malawi Marketing and Technical Manager Peter Njikho said Monday that the competition would choose the best coffee from this year\’s season from the participating countries.

\"The best coffees from the participating countries will be submitted to the competition and the finest coffee will be tested and judged for the finesse, flavour and taste,\" he said.

Participating states are Zambia, Tanzania and Malawi.

He said the top five winning coffee flavours from each country will be selected by the judges and will participate in the 2009 African Limited Edition Coffee Auction to be held at the 6th African Fine Conference and Exhibition in February 2009 in Kigali, Rwanda.

The International buyers and traders will cup, select and bid for the best coffee from each country for showcasing at the International Coffee Conference in Europe, America and Asia to be held in 2009, he said.
