Phiri optimistic of making it to Angola
After bringing hope and optimism into the Malawian National team, coach Kinnah Phiri is now confident that the Flames will qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Angola in 2010.
Malawi beat Djibouti 3-0 at the Gouled Stadium in Djibouti City on Friday to put themselves on equal footing with DR Congo, who are also occupying second position in Group 12 with 9 points, but with a better goal difference.
Egypt currently top the group with 12 points.
Malawi will meet DR Congo in do-or-die battle set for Blantyre on October 12, and if they win that match, the Flames could set themselves up with a trip to Angola in 2010 as best runners up in the group stages of the World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifier games.
Speaking to KickOff.com on arrival in Blantyre after their impressive and successful trip to Djibouti at the weekend, an excited Phiri said his team will give everything at their disposal to make sure they beat DR Congo at home and set their dream alive of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola in 2010.
“I am proud with the way the team performed away from home against Djibouti. It was not an easy game as Djibouti threw everything they have at us.
“Although Egypt are presently leading our group, we still have an outside chance of booking ourselves a ticket of qualifying for World Cup 2010. This is football, and anything is possible. If they (Egypt) lose at home and we beat DR Congo at home, then our chances of going to Angola in 2010 are going to be very high.
“I have great confidence in my team and I trust that they will make the whole nation in Malawi proud by qualifying for the prestigious tournament,” said the former Free State Stars coach.
Phiri disclosed that Malawi will be arriving in South Africa on September 28 for an international friendly against Bafana Bafana set for September 30.
“I am also planning to use the opportunity of playing Bafana Bafana to set up a week long camp in South Africa,” he added.
