The UN Food and Agriculture Orgnisation (FAO)’s Director General, Jaques Diouf, arrives in Malawi on Thursday to start a three-day visit during which he will also call on President Bingu Wa Mutharika, senior FAO officials said here Wednesday.
FAO Malawi Representative Pinit Korsieporn said in Lilongwe on Wednesday that Diouf’s main purpose for the visit is to confer the Agricola Medal on Mutharika in recognition of his efforts to improve agriculture development in Malawi.
"The recognition is given to the president upon his efforts to support agriculture development, not only in Malawi but also in Southern African Region, by giving priority to issues related to agricultural development, food production and poverty reduction," he said.
The Agricola Medal, FAO’s highest distinction, is given to eminent and world figures of the times who have individually undertaken prominent roles in advocating measures aimed at eradicating hunger and increasing food production in the world.
Mutharika has done this by ensuring that his country has a bumper harvests in the past three years by subsidising farm inputs, including seeds and fertilisers.
