BLANTYRE - Five people have been killed in Malawi’s commercial capital Blantyre after a policeman crashed a truck which he had been trying to impound, police said.
Spokesman Davie Chingwalu told AFP police had stopped the truck which was carrying bags of dried fish as well as a number of passengers.
A police sergeant snatched the keys from the resisting driver but failed to control the truck, which accelerated backwards into an electricity pole and overturned, Chingwalu said.
Two passengers died on the spot while three others were pronounced dead at the hospital, he said. Six were in intensive care and four escaped with minor injuries.
Chingwalu said the sergeant had been arrested and charged him with manslaughter.
