Telecommunications Limited (MTL) and Hauwei Technologies of China have signed a deal worth 3.2 billion kwacha (US$22.9 million) to build a state-of-the-art optical fibre to ease communication in the country, APA has learnt here.
The agreement, signed Tuesday, will see Malawi having a reliable and robust telecommunication network in the next three years, according to the two sides.
MTL Chief Executive Officer Horst Holzhauser said the upgrading of the backbone network with optical fibre equipment will bring Malawi to a point where state-of-the-art services such as broadband internet can be introduced.
« Malawi will have an optical fibre network that is reliable and will deliver for the next five years, » he said.
Holzhauser said the project would connect Malawi to the rest of the world as it is expected that the backbone might link up with the on-going marine cable network dubbed Africa One.
Hauwei representative Guo Aiping said his company would start building the optical fibre highway at the end of this year.
