EAST Kilbride became a forum for discussion on the plight of Malawi.
The Scottish Government’s Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture Linda Fabiani, met with Shenard Mazengera, Oxfam’s Advocacy Manager in Malawi, to discuss the charity’s work in the state.
The pair, who met in the Oxfam shop in the Plaza, also used the opportunity to meet the shop’s staff and volunteers.
Also in attendance was West Mains’ Michael Docherty as the Burnbrae Place man, was spending a week on work experience with Linda Fabiani.
He along with the others listened to Shenard Mazengera tell those present of the challenges facing his country where access to basic health and education is limited and the average life expectancy is less than 40 years.
Welcoming him, Linda Fabiani said: “The Scottish Government recognises the importance of the work carried out by Oxfam.
“Scotland is a responsible nation and our commitment to international development is long term.
“I’m happy to welcome Shenard to Scotland, where Malawi has so many friends and the continued support of this government.”
Mary Murray manager of the local Oxfam, added: “We’re delighted to have Linda and Shenard here to visit our shop.
“All the volunteers and I always find it really rewarding to meet other members of Oxfam staff.”
