Malaria free

Missjenn-malawi

Had a very adventurous few weeks, last weekend we went to Cape Maclear on the Lake. it was AMAZING. yes, i most likely now have Bilharzia, but hey, it was too nice not to swim in. hehe spent most of the weekend either sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, boozing or waiting for food. One night it took 2 hours for 8 meals, and in the end i didn't get mine cos it was too late. Malawi time is terrible.

so the best story that i can tell you...

Nsima (the most disgusting and pointless food in the history of the world) is the food that ALL malawians eat. Think semolina, with no taste, and added sand.. then to the extent that you almost vomit at the sight of it, thats how much i hate it.

well last week we went to visit a girl in the village near us. she offered to cook us some Nsima, and we didn't want to offend her by saying no. so i said yes, but only a little. she put it down in front of us and i was nearly sick. she left us sitting in her house, and me and kate just couldn't face it. we had no bag with us, no pockets or anywhere to stash it. so we had no option but to walk home with it in out Bra's. what makes it worse is that when we left to go home we had to give her a hug without her feeling that our bras were full of the food that she had just made for us.

we couldn;t help laughing all the way home, and everyone thought we were mad. i have a picture of the incident but i think i'll leave that one till i'm home!

we nearly bought chicks today at the market. we were so close, but we didn't know what they ate so we didn't in the end. it would have been devestating if one had died. so we are going to wait till after easter and maybe get a few then. so if anyone has any ideas for names let me know!

anyways thats all folks.

xxxx

......after we went to Mr Paulosi's for lunch, bless the man, he is soo nice, but by goodness was i nearly sick about 10 times trying to shuv the food down my neck. it was Nsima -GADDDDDZZZZ, with pumpkinleaves, groundnuts and LOADS of salt, with a side of goat, yes goat. I.ATE.GOAT. the whole time i was like, there is goat in my mouth, there is goat in y mouth. it was rancid, but he had bought it just for us, along with a fanta each. i felt terrible.

This is the most horrible article I have ever read on this blog and a digrace wonder how it was published

many thanks stanley for your comment. the moderator only thinks such things posted on the net by foreigners on malawi could help give malawians a better perspective of azungu. sometimes we just don't know how to host them!

I have laughed at the adjectives used in the above article. It seems the Mzungu does not know how much we Malawians treasure Nsima. Anyway she's entitled to her opinion. Have a good weekend. Cheers!

U know- missjenn, a lot of us aren't seeing the humour in the bra-stashing nsima thing. I understand the need to be truthful and the right to an opinion. I'm from Malawi and I am left seriously unimpressed. Nsima is a staple - I grew up with it but that is no way to go about describing it - that same dish is eaten in Most of Southern Africa including the now Oprah-famous South Africa. That aside you laid out your thoughts and thats fine - it's yo right. I hope your stay in the warm heart....

hello. so unfortunate to trash pur treasured food that way. simply shows you are not familiar with malawian and indeed, african life. pity that we still do have such azungu's around. i thought they were gone with welensky.

this is typical of some Norwegian always thinking low about other people. And they also have salted lamb, raw food etc and we eat gracefully

Anonymous said...

I know who the bloody naughty mzungu girl is and me as Malawian can not let some stupid mzungu demean us on our own soil. Over our dead body. You will hear it in the news. Enough is enough!

Such type of azungus should pack up and go to their loved countries to eat their 'good' food. They should not pretend that they dont like a, b, c.. when we know evrything else here is dearly fought for. We dont need to be insulted in our dear Malawi by anything we eat or do. let no one teach us what is best for us. Africa for Africans and everything in it.

This whole thing is so sickening, If thus how this woman thinks of Malawi and its food why don't she just leave.I have heard stories of these people washing their hands after shaking a black person's hand.

The ploblem here is that we want to hear what we want to hear and if anybody comes with a something difference its he/she has committed an abomination.....whatever she has said is entitled to her opinion, thats how she felt..we cant expect anybody to say good about msima.....i am a 100% malawian but i am strongly behind her.....imagine the process of coming up with this nsima...that is starting from the garden aaaaaaaahhh and the benefits....shes right

Anonymous said...

somebody said the mzungu is right bcoz of smthg to do with the process of coming up with nsima, starting from the garden. I dont get this, is there smthg wrong now with agricultural products? To the mzungu, who/what is forcing you to be in the land of Bilharzia and such nasty food? If u are not open minded enuff to accept other cultures why would u even embark on a volunteer mission to be a teacher. I eat nsima proudly in Malawi, Sadza, Ugali, Pap, or what else it is called around Africa, and at no point have i ever forced it down another persons throat, u dont want it fine, mo 4 me. enjoy ur diseased geese livers, indulge in ur frog legs, smack ur lips to some haggis, just pass me the nsima and goat and let me be in peace.

Thanks for you comment. You feel so frustrated about nsima. If you are a Norwegian then sorry i also can not eat some of the foods you eat, like prawns.

You have committed treason.

poor lil missjenn is from lovely Irvine, UK, famously known for..er..umm...at any rate whether what she said is true or not, whether u r Malawian and agree with her or not, whether she has a right to express her opinion or not, lets be clear on one thing, she took perfectly good food from someones house and saw it fit and funny to stuff it down her bra. That is just rude, plain and simple. Ppl could have eaten that, yes the same ppl who cooked that nasty food could have consumed the said nasty food to their hearts content. what an air head she is...

miss jenn is a disgrace to our nation. the police have been informed about the issue and we should expect her not to be on our soil malawi. come on, miss jenn is stupid.what are doing in a country where they is bilhazia or the food is disgusting?l have a strong opinion that you suffer from syphillis or you have once fallen in a toilet tank. please leave our country and never return.we will deal with u idiot. now the fellow malawian supporting the idiot, you are also a morron my brother.

To hell with being entitled to her own opinion...
I hope the police get hold of her ASAP before we angry malawians break her bones,as her address and mobile number are posted on her blog.

The content of this article just shows how shallow some azungu are. They don't know that disrespecting a people's culture is the worst insult. I don't know if this mzungu even went to college but if she did, it was just for nothing. How brainless!! And the chicks she wants to buy, may be she had just better give them her real name because she thinks like a chicken herself.

It is very defeating that while countries are battling to have an intercultural front, this uncurcumcised lady wants the world to get back the much unrevered discriminatory tendancies that have for a long time sabotaged progress.I for one would like to ask her to humbly apologise if by choosing to teach in Malawi she really has all the good wishes for the ever non reactory Malawians.

If she thinks nsima is nasty, then she should think of the frogs, lizards and worms she eats in her country. Let her go back to her country where they kiss dogs. It is disgusting to us too.

Am a Malawian who totally agree that Nsima is one of the most tasteless and least nutritious food in the world. Preference for Nsima has contributed enormously to malnutrition of children in this country. For those of you who think its traditional, know that maize is a fairy recent crop in Malawi brought in by the portuguese. The modern way of making & farming nsima is partly a contribution of colonialism. Instead of venting your frustrations on this brave young lady who is brave enough to come here and live among us I suggest you engross yourself in finding ways on how to make Nsima more tasty and nutritious and how to encourage sustainable diet diversification among ordinary Malawians.

missjane is a disgrace to the teaching profession. There is no trace of evidence that she likes the country so what is she doing there? Get out and send your offensive comments from somewhere else!!! How dare you show such kind of disrespect and backwardness. This is not about whether you are entitled to your opinions or not, this is about understanding and respecting diversity in this rainbow world and I wonder how you managed to qualify as a teacher? I have got nothing against your taste but I have got everything against your lack of respect and please allow me to ask you to examine your conscience through deep introspection and find out why you want to travel the world if you are not ready to express your opinions about the countries hosting you with respect.

Most reactions to this piece I can see are hot. But it’s ok with me because the author is expressing their own perspective (not that of the mzungus community as per say). My own opinion is of worry for the author if they feel unconscious of the fact that the opposite of their perspective is also very valid as you can see from the outrageous comments of the beholders! So as fact opinion about the author’s perspective I see the piece valid, but as wholesome FACT about the TRUTH of nsima as being one of the disgusting food is totally disputable and where the opinion of the author points to such; it can only mean a revelation of their own inadequacy of what I may call ‘natural understanding’.

Only from the later point of view would one justify the ‘outrageous comments (reserved to some extent though still), to the piece otherwise such comment may also be rated at the same magnitude as those of the original author.

Someone´s finding nsima unpalatable is merely their opinion.A sample of opinions(many of them very brash)on Brit cuisine readily reveals that many find elements of it repulsive. (Anyone here into mushy peas?). This doesn´t result in the Brits saying things like, “they should pack” & go home (mnsodzi, 13 March) or, “she should pack and go otherwise will teach her a lesson”(annonymous, 13 March) .
If the pic here is that of the author, then, at face value, she probably is young (& possibly some of the many things, pos.&neg., associated with youth..),so give her a break, her apparent brashness will mellow with time. She apparently dislikes nsima with a passion, but maybe she´s fallen for other things Malawian..maybe she´s into Mw music..who knows..live & let live..

Okay.... First of all, this lady has a right to express her opinion! Those of you who are calling for her deportation need some lessons in Democracy 101! Someone said Malawi has enough English teachers but the question is how qualified are they? How would you say "we have enough teachers in Malawi" when two thirds of 2007 MSCE candidates can't pass?? Come on people, learn to live with people who don't agree with you!! I love nsima and I completely disagree with MissJenn-Malawi that it's disgusting, but that does not warrant me or anybody to call for her deportation like she committed a crime! Are you guys nuts???? This is Malawi my friends, it's not North Korea!!!

By the way, maybe you should be calling for the deportation of the Chinese deplomats whose government has no respect for human rights than on petty issues like someone who does not like nsima!!

Its strongly shameful and riduculous for someone in this dynamic age of globalisation, warfare, and technology to assume standing tall and despice someone's tradition, status and expect to go unnoticed. What Missjenn does not know is that nations are spending alot of resources to eradicate such sick notions of pride, hatred, let alone perpetuated by a childrens teacher on a mission in foreign land. What will those children he poses with in the picture grow up to think of the vast number of other similar teachers in Africa. Her message about Nsima, all popular in many African countries,Ghana,Zimbabwe,S.Africa, Zambia etc, though she might have been honest to herself and her cronies, such public a stance might do more harm than good globally.Such are ill concepts which portray bad advocacy towards multi-cultural or multi-national inchoation. Her unsolicited fallacious comment about Bihalzia could also inhibit a bad notion that cape Maclear(Malawi tourism site)is guaranteed to leave you infected with a mere dip in its waters; thats frustrating and immoral to the people who are at best promoting tourism as a way of national diversification efforts to get rid of people like her going about on teaching missions.Sometimes its not out of choice that people do eat what they eat, other factors too play part such as poverty,or nature and its very naive to take advantage of your circumstances and look down on other people. You cannot exchange Mr Paulos goodwill with abuse and his love with bare rudeness. There're more better ways of expressing opinions than her demeaning, unscrupulous, unmannerly, outrageous, abusive terms.Does she want another Jade Goody? She definitely owes Malawians an apology.

Miss Jenny. what a pity. You dont behave like that in a strange land. I feel fortunate to have lived here in the west and that now I know what you people are really like. you are not all you have portrayed to be to us. And your blog is evidence. I am thinking of the sea at Blackpool. Noone can even swim in it. Its an insult to ridicule our fresh water lake. And for the beloved NSIMA, can it compare to the overbolied cabbage eaten here? All nutritious content bolied out? we have grown up with it and havent died from it yet. Ndipo timadyera ndiwo osati without. Ndiye ungaimve kuwawadi.
I personally feel Malawi will not lose anything with one less so called "English Teacher". She seems to me like the calibre of my Form 1 English teacher, a from Azungulands, who only knew to play for us Tracy Chapman songs and get us to copy the lyrics and ask questions from there. All because he didnt have a clue what to do.

Please don't entertain azungu ndi anthu oipa they want to gain on to top of us. Go and stay in your land leave us we are happy with what we have. We enjoy our nsima. Go to your country and eat you spices we will not regret. Goooooooooooooooooooooooo.

The opinion that she didnot like the food is not offensive, but the attitude behind the whole reporting is that offensive and rude..Nobody argues against expressing her opnion, but reasobly enough one can see the mockery behind her writing. If you're a Malawian/African & you cant read such writings on the wall, then you have a problem. This is pure mockery & rudeness, of which one wonders of her claim..
I am currently a student in Canada. We have had some students and other volunteers who went to Malawi, Kenya and other parts of the continent..one of the girls reported her experience regarding nsima or ugali (kiswahili). She complained that she was not well informed as to how nsima is handled, though it was a little tough but she could not redicule the food or the people..another one stayed in nsanje for almost half a year. She used to post pictures of nsima on her blog..we could her see participating. She never rediculed nsima or people she went to help, though she had some problems with it.

Reasonable & good a Zungu never speak rudely or evil against African culture or food.
That food is eaten almost the entire sub-saharan Africa & beyond. In West Africa its called FUFU or panded yam (one from yams which is almost like kondowole),in East Africa is called ugali..
So the whole reporting isnt that attractive at all, but lets forgive her. If she is still in Malawi, please dont try to attack her. Let us teach her manners. All the so called heroes of Africa probaly including Mandela, were brought up under such environment of nsima & goats etc..

I can just guess that she is young girl who like to make funny of everything they dont like..but she will learn from this issue.

I think that this girl illustrates the typical ignorant european girl, doesn't she realise that she is insulting the same people who are welcoming to her. akunyelera pogona. i have lived in the UK for the past 8 years and they eat really disgusting food. what about mashy peas, deep fried mars bars. for goodness sake who eats deep fried chocolate? i feel that she shouldn't have come to work in Malawi because she is not mature enough to handle the culture change. i have a lot of British friends who like nsima after tasting it at my house and come regularly to come and eat nsima, pumpkin leaves and goat meat. ndiye aka ka mzungu kakagwele kazipita kwao. she should be deported! she is not adding value to Malawi. kodi anamuitana ndani mwana wamwano ngati ameneyu?

malawi has many good thigns that we can talk about. there are so numerous things that are not so good. but this girl has gone too far. expressing her opinion on food in itself is not wrong, but the way she's done it sounds rude. we all have our favorite dishes, and we also have our least favuorite. i find her comments unfortunate. i wonder if MissJenny has apologised for the silly comments she has made.

i find it strange that most foreigners only find negative things to talk about africa. they show pictures of starving childresn and all. it is a fact that people starve, have not portable water, education etc, but there are also many who are not starving, are educated and live in very good houses. some mzungu asked me whether its true that african children grow up playing with monkeys! their view about africa is all negative. this has created "beef" in people, and the issue here is not just the so called "disgusting" nsima. i think commentators are have just found an opportunity to pour out their anger at the so many bad things foreigners say about us.

i would only advise Jenny to apologise, maybe thru this blog.

I think we should not bash the posting of the article. What is clear is the fact that she did not handle the shock of eating nsima with goat well. I have been around a few countries on the continent and got a few culcural shocks but did not express myself the way she did. There are better ways doing it and getting the message across. She scores pretty low on my diplomacy scale.

Naivety and stupidity aside, this wayward girl is irreparably intellectually-challenged. One wonders how a Norwegian girl, probably a high school dropout, could have found herself teaching English in a Malawian school. Let's face it, if the language and the attitudes expressed in the posting are anything to go by, this girl passes for intellectually benighted and frivolous to the point of being sickening. She has the audacity to mock the hospitality of her Malawian hosts; she nonchalantly infers that Lake Malawi is bilharzia-infested. What a load of rubbish! It appears that she had never got it in her dull mind before she tried it, that Nsima has to be eaten with something tasteful to be palatable. She certainly has never read that people come from all over the world to regale in the niceties of Lake Malawi, a fresh water lake with some of the world's most delicious fish species. This twit has the audacity to besmirch the beautiful Lake Malawi, and to betray the trust of his Malawian hosts! The sooner she retired to her native Norway, never to ever venture into other people's lands, the better for all humanity. If some people have described her posting as racist, I describe it and this twit's person as profoundly inane and unutterably nonsensical.

I'm an African-American sister, living in New York City. For us, grits (made from wheat), is a bit like nsima. While I understand the right to free speech, and her opinion, I wouldn't blog, berating the food! I learned that sometimes, it's best to keep your mouth shut! White folk here, dislike grits, too.

I wish more African-Americans worked over there; we have more connections to you, especially with food.

For you Malawians who dislike nsima, please understand this. We made grits as slaves, as it was similar to nsima and kept us alive.

We have more choices now, but guess what? We made Grits TASTE GOOD! The fact that it does not have a definite "flavor" means you can add your own spices, meat, fish, or whatever to it, saving money. I bet Jenn can't cook. I'd be scared of her food; and the food in the UK is awful, even their own people think so!

In the meantime, can someone tell ME how to fix it? I don't want to eat bread with my meals all the time, and we don't get this, and other recipes for East African food here––just Ethiopian. I would LOVE to see a restaurant from Malawi open in Harlem!

In missjenn's defence, i have lived in both countries and i agree, that nsima is the reason for malnurishment in malawi. It has no heatlh benefits.
However if you visit scotland where she is from you will find such delicacies such as haggis, deep fried mars bars, and irn bru..all of which are not healthy either. The reason for obesity in Scotland.

Although posting this article was a mistake, being scottish i genuinley believe that she did not intend to hurt or offend any malawians...if malawians were to taste scottish food i believe that they would be utterly disgusted!

I can understand the halfwit who posted the article. What I can not understand is the Malawian who is agreeing with her about the Nsima. Talk of foolishness! 14 Million Malawians enjoy that dish. Even exposed people forgo the supposedly fine western dishes and still opt for Nsima. Is it indeed as tasteless as this she-goat claims? I think she got it wrong about how nsima is eaten. She probably ate without relish - couldn't ask because of her unhealthy predisposition towards anything Malawian (Remember she starts her article by insinuating that being in Cape Maclear automatically makes one catch birhazia. In which case I must agree that it is tasteless.

By the way, cape Maclear is a beautiful place if you do not hate Malawi.

That was a very malicious article. There was no need to speak of an African staple food in that manner. As opposed to saying, "it is the most pointless food in the world.", try "I have found this food to be the worst I have tasted." You definitely have not travelled the whole world, you do not know what else is out there. I am willing to bet that your opinion in based on visiting a few countries and assuming you are well travelled and know everything about all people's cultures, you show more ignorance than arrogance. This article however, is only one person's opinion, a person that takes too many liberties in my opinion.

I have been all over Europe but I miss my nsima so much that once in a while I had to make special arrangements to taste it. And you moderator, you are the most useless I have ever seen

Just now finding this article after many years. I'm Nican Tlaca from the americas but have moved to Uganda and let me tell you if/when i go back i will miss eating kawunga(posho) very much. and also, seriously . . . if you're a foreigner, show respect. Seriously, because you are a guest. Even if you move there to settle, you will always be a guest. No matter what, people will always call me mzungu (mostly because not many latin americans are found out this way) and that means I don't belong here, but am invited to be. People who host others are giving up a lot, and they are making adjustments for you already. Honor that.

You disgust humanity, You have no good white woman, I would crush her head my self with Mwala, and this bitch defending Europeans if I see her I will kill her entire family, I would say that white people your most uncultured people on earth, you have no respect or whatsoever, I hope this woman never dares to step in Malawi again because I have her picture, I will definitely skin her off alive and let dogs suck her white acid blood, Fucking cunt of English mentality,

This is shit, She hardly know what she says, shows how stupid some Malawians are;

(Am a Malawian who totally agree that Nsima is one of the most tasteless and least nutritious food in the world. Preference for Nsima has contributed enormously to malnutrition of children in this country. For those of you who think its traditional, know that maize is a fairy recent crop in Malawi brought in by the Portuguese. The modern way of making & farming nsima is partly a contribution of colonialism. Instead of venting your frustrations on this brave young lady who is brave enough to come here and live among us I suggest you engross yourself in finding ways on how to make Nsima more tasty and nutritious and how to encourage sustainable diet diversification among ordinary Malawians)

Now Bitches!

This dish is eaten widely across Africa where it has different local names:

Nshima - Zambia
Nsima - Malawi
Sadza - Zimbabwe
Chima - Mozambique
Ugali - Kenya, Malawi & Mozambique (Yao language), Tanzania (also called ngima in Kenya, and nguna in Tanzania)
Poshto - Uganda
Ubugali - Rwanda
Bugali - DR Congo
Meliepap/Pap - South Africa
Fufu - West Africa
Sakoro - Northern Ghana
Sakora - Northern Nigeria
Couscous de Cameroon - Cameroon

We dont care what UK bitch teacher said, they can go stuck their classy food in their assholes!

Here's a post from an American food blogger in New York who absolutely loved nsima and ndiwo: http://www.unitednationsoffood.com/2010/07/malawian-food-nyc/

So some westerners do respect and enjoy Malawian food!
